When teeth experience significant decay or trauma, our dentists often recommend ceramic dental crowns to restore the strength, beauty, and function of the teeth. Once placed, your dental crown should look and feel like a natural tooth. However, it may need some special care.
Before receiving your permanent dental crown, Dr. Smith or Dr. Carrell may provide a temporary crown to protect the tooth and maintain space for the new crown. This temporary dental crown will not be as stable and should be treated with gentle care. Avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods, as these could dislodge the dental crown. Brush your teeth gently and floss in and out of the spaces between the crown, instead of up and down.
Once you have received your permanent dental crown, you may treat it as you would your normal teeth. We do advise you to avoid hard and sticky foods, as these can crack or dislodge your dental crown. Dr. Smith and Dr. Carrell would be happy to demonstrate how to properly floss your new crown. With proper care, your dental crown should last for many, many years.
